AOL no longer lets users post web pages from outside

America Online no longer allows its subscribers to post web pages from the internet. I was not able to determine if this was revealed to AOL customer support, since they apparently do not read email from customers before sending a reply. After long waits on hold, I eventually spoke to humans on the telephone support lines but they told me they do not support FTP "problems."

Dear John Neuhaus,

Hello, my name is Chad B. and I am writing to you on behalf of America Online in response to your recent e-mail.

I just received your e-mail forwarded to my personal attention and I want to assure you that I replied as soon as I read your message. I apologize for the delay in answering your email and for any inconvenience this has caused.

I apologize for the frustrations you are experiencing using America Online's (AOL's) File Transfer Protocol (FTP) feature. I appreciate your patience with this matter. The FTP feature allows you to upload files to and download files from remote computers. Files can consist of software, text and graphics from the Internet.

Although we have taken steps to make FTP as easy as possible to use, we feel America Online's (AOL's) own software libraries are even easier. If you are looking for a specific file or just feel like browsing, you may have better luck finding it in AOL's file libraries (keyword: FILE SEARCH).

If you have used other FTP software, we think you will be very pleased with ours. We have integrated aspects of our Download Manager with FTP so graphics can be displayed as they download. You can even interrupt a download and continue it later.

For more information about FTP and the FTP space AOL provides for you, go to one of the following Keywords: FTP or Keyword: MY PLACE

FTP access to ftp.hometown.aol.com from outside by AOL members has been
turned off. Did the administrator of ftp.hometown.aol.com do this
intentionally? Is there another way to put a web page to members.aol.com
from outside using a generic FTP client?

Please don't send the "Web page authoring" letter as a response. I've
received it twice and don't need to read it again.

Regards,
John Neuhaus

Michael:

Thanks for responding to my request for help. However, the resources you
cited did not resolve my problem. One of the the things you suggested
comes close.

I wrote to FTPMaster before I contacted you. The canned answer mentions
my issue, using ftp.hometown.aol.com from outside.

On 4/1/01 10:10 PM, AOL FTP Master (ftpmaster@aol.net), wrote:

Unfortunately, the link leads to a page that does not mention
ftp.hometown.aol.com.

Until recently, I posted my web pages to ftp.hometown.aol.com from
outside AOL. Now, when I try to do this, access is denied. Do you know if
there is a new method for AOL members who bring their own access to put
web pages on members.aol.com from the internet?

John Neuhaus
